A new year, a fresh take

A new year, a fresh take
by Rachel K

Another new year has rolled by! Each day is so exciting, so inspiring to see what folks decide to put together. I'm glad to have been taking pictures, otherwise I would have a hard time explaining it to anyone.

Yet, it's more than the finished products that make Sticky so special. It's having the space and time to be together, shoulder to shoulder, knee deep in corks and cardboard! It reminds me to slow down and enjoy even the simplest of things. Take some paper, tear it into strips, cut pictures from magazines, and as I am gluing it reminds me of a story which inspires the art. Add some fun folks around the table, some good music, and there's no other place I'd rather be.

I have learned, however, that it's not everyone who can see random scrappy arts materials and feel comfortable using them. A little structure goes a long way, so I am adding a Family Class to the weekday early mornings. I will change the theme every week, based on materials from our reuse collection. The projects will be simple and inspire us to do more art together at home, too. As we learn the properties of things, we will become skilled crafters and build on successes-- with lots of room for mistakes!

Open Lab times will concentrate into the weekday afternoons and Saturday mornings for Coffee & Crafts. These times have less structure, and more time for you to explore and try something new. I am also adding a monthly Last Saturday Workshop in the afternoon. These will be more focused on skill-building with more specific materials, and with a local artist who has a talent to share. For kids a little older, teens and grown-ups, too.

Dig around in the new website, sign up for something! Let's remember what it's like to play intuitively, and use our hands and brains to tackle a design challenge. We will learn to trust ourselves more, to trust each other, and find a new freedom we didn't know was there before.

Warm wishes for this fresh new year!

A Little Serendipity

Building silly contraptions after school
A bird's nest, a tree and a rocket
Tape then paint-- peel and wow!

A Little Serendipity

We've been having all kinds of fun at Sticky lately. Between our Open Family Lab, the After School Program and Workshops on Fridays, we are continually amazed at what folks come up with-- just by playing with materials and figuring out how different things go together. There is important learning going on here!

Visited by you-know-who the other morning

Troubleshoot!
That slope doesn't let the rubber band snap high enough...
That kind of glue didn't work to make the leaf stick...
This tape doesn't peel right...
My figure keeps falling over...

Sometimes things don't go how we planned. But with a little patience and serendipity we figure something else out, often exceeding our original expectations. We won't know till we try!

We hope you can visit us soon-- to explore new materials, to make mistakes, to let go and try again, to trust yourself, to be spontaneous. The results might surprise you.

Summer Stick-to-it-tive-ness

SUMMER, we are off to a Sticky start, and we're sticking with it.

What a blast so far! Campers are rolling up their sleeves and blending paper pulp to make artsy paper; mixing up the paste for paper mache animals; trying a hand at throwing a bowl on the pottery wheel; folding modular origami creations; planning and building table-top cities and forests.

In small camp groups, the kids get plenty of social time, tell jokes, and have a chance to share ideas and create together. This makes for lively studio time! Drop in and see what the kids are doing-- come in for Family Lab time and share in the fun. Check out the website calendar or summer camp page, you can see the themes or the week. We can often extend the materials onto the family tables-- just ask us.
See our new expanded studio space!

We are enjoying a little Grown-up time, too! We are adding more programs for adults, and have ideas for so many more. Share your ideas also, drop us a line. We want to try a weekday evening, and a weekend afternoon. Let us know your preferences and let's see if we can't start up some lasting programs-- for all members of the family.

Finally, we have a new artist in the Storefront Gallery. Help us welcome Erin Garcia and her Feed the Fish co. paper and felt crafts. You will love her very clean style and crisp presentation, not to mention her super adorable designs. Grab a handmade card, felt pin, or special event banner.

Hope your summer is full of warm sun and smiles, and a little crafting time with your family.

Save the date! Sticky 2-year birthday party, Sunday July 21, starts at 1pm.

See you soon at Sticky!
